The "this generation" doesn't refer to Jesus' generation, it refers to the future generation that will witness the signs of the end. The verse should be read as "that generation" not as "my generation".
Basically what He was saying is that once the signs start to appear, they will not drag on for centuries onwards, but will all happen within the lifespan of a single generation.
