>they say it only charges, doesn't transfer data
>takes it home
>notices the missing pin on both sides of the lightning cable
>decides to look it up
>come across a reddit post about this
>look at the comments
>it's literally talking about how these cables are knock-offs of knock-offs of knock-offs or they were made in production with extreme cut offs
>decide to cut open the lightning cable
>find out it has 2 copper wires
>do some research and find out 2 wires for 1 cord means it's charging only, at least they didn't lie
>find out online these also come with NFC but it's an extra that must be paid for

I've sealled off the hole where the lightning cable used to be and used super glue to seal it permanently, should I bother using it or nah?

Also, did I make the right call by cutting off the cable? I wouldn't want even my worst enemy to use a cable like that. BTW how do I find out if it has NFC, I can't pry it open even with the multi-tool.

OP Here, so something I didn't mention, I only used it for one thing, which was to charge my bluetooth earphones, before I did the cut I unplugged it, it was charging for 4 minutes, not even what, 0.5cm from unplugging the LED Lights turn off, it was at this moment now as I am writing this I realised it fucking died, cus now the cable literally does not work. So whatever was in that circle, literally fried or some shit.

Yeah, you've probably got a short in the wire that you tore out like a barbarian, so congrats on that. Depending on construction, it'll have been completely fried or it'll keep thinking that it's the only cord "charging" so you'll get little or no output on the others.
I think the factory that mass produced those things would be genuinely impressed with how stupid you are. They aren't built to last, and somehow you decided that it's short lifespan wasn't short enough.

You've gotta crack it open and remove the rest of the wire if there's even a chance to fix your little garbage plastic trinket.

I never said I plugged it into anything

Doesn't matter. If it was turned on, you've at best potentially given up a lot of your hardware identifiers, and at worst you've had all your traffic while there captured and have been completely and totally pwned.
If you're the kind of retard who doesn't know how to check data lines without a knife, and the kind of schizo just paranoid enough to do so with a knife, I'd recommend a wipe, a shred, and a new phone.
Then, until you do any modicum of cursory research, stay the hell away from things you don't understand if they scare you this much.

    >Conclusion: Product looks to function as advertised, but I don't trust it still unless I dissect it completely. More monkeys with bigger rocks potentially required for further analysis.

You can use things other than a knife to check the data lines, even if the connector pads are still there... which they weren't...
A Google will answer "how to read nfc chips" instantly, which is literally what you're asking for since you don't want to crack it open. If there is an NFC chip, what exactly do you think it's going to do?
Better yet, explain to me what you think an NFC chip IS in the first place, since you clearly just found out about their existence through reddit.
IF there is one, and that's still a big if, my money would be on it functioning as a business card or an advertisement, so good luck with that adventure.

Also, little charging adaptors with the data pads removed are cheap af, then you can just avoid ever looking like a crackhead in the first place while using any rando cord/powerbrick you please.

Pretty sure anon said it died before he fully unplugged when it was charging his earphones before cutting off the lightning cable.

          Anonymous

He said the pretty light went out when he started to unplug it. He only just realized it's dead-dead after doing field surgery on it.
Hard to tell if that's when it happened, or if it was later. Especially since devices turning off are, oddly enough, a symptom of them being unplugged.

It's clear we're dealing with a retard, so I'm leaning towards a penis-knife related short caused by a floating live wire.
I also posit that the wire was cut just at some spot on the mid-point or near the base of the hub, prior to being flayed by our Texas Chainsaw Hackerman here, rather than being actually removed competed from the board.
He can't get into the super-plastic developed by the craftiest Chinese spy-device factory in existence, no matter how much he bangs rocks on it and prys with his penis-knife, so whatever wire is in that housing is still hanging out covered in an unknown amount of superglue.

It wouldn't be a surprise if the free landfill-bound dongle given to our spooked protagonist shit the bed on the first use, but just assessing the situation, I'm leaning towards user error and the mutilation.

I will have a good laugh throughout the day at OP who needed to cut the wire to check for NFCs like a genuine schizophrenic.

I've seen alot of bad lies and really believable lies then really bad "truths" and really good truths backed up by heaps of evidence, I know LULZ is basically "Pics or it didn't happen" but considering this guy was crazy enough to cut open a wire like that and somehow short whatever was in that circle before he even cut the damn wire at this point I'm considering this to be "so crazy it's actually true"

This does not seem like a lie, if someone asked me to look at their broken shit just to clarify something I'd chuck it away too I wouldn't want garbage filling up my store.

Idk if OP is still reading this but for the future...please get a data blocking USB, get an NFC detector app if you're gonna be suspicious about a freebie from some Chinese cybersecurity company.

I highly doubt cybersecurity events would allow companies to bring malicious stuff to be distributed as freebies but considering I had shit happen to me with Chinese products I would be SOMEWHAT suspicious about a freebie like that. But not to the point of doing... "that".

This thread gave me the laugh of a lifetime, whether your were serious or joking, thanks for the laughs OP.
