caprice wagon

Europoor here. Thoughs on 80-90 caprice wagon ? I found some in my country, they all are enough cheap for my broke ass. Some have olds 307/5.0, some chevy 305/ 5.0 and they all black, because they were hearses on some point.
Which engine is better old's or chevy ?
What to look for while buying ?
What common problems do they have ?
How reliable they really are ?

Neither of those are very good engines unless de-smogged, although they might have not put smog hardware on export European models. reliability is not an issue; V8/RWD cars are something GM knows how to build.

they all are, because all of them were converted to run on LPG on some point.

probably could stand to have the heads decked as theyre probably 8.5:1, and swap the cast headers off.

i know, i even found those parts online here. For chevy small block. Is funny how even here you can get those easily and they are priced good. Compared to parts for old france or italian cars or even old japanese

Both motors are absolute dogs, but you have to go with the 305 Chebby. The difference in parts availability and prices, will be the difference between a driven vehicle and a driveway decoration. Also, the Olds engine has a different transmission bolt pattern, so if something goes wrong, you are stuck looking for a core with a BOP pattern (Buick/Olds/Pontiac)

307 wasn't a good engine. They had oil pressure issues, and randomly shit some parts and die. 305 works, but it has less power than a 2000 Hyundai Elantra, and that 3 speed slushbox wastes 30% of that power, and it can only get that 120 hp at 40 to 55 mph and 70 to 90 mph

i know my last car have like 80hp to wheels and it was also big old wagon. I drive some old malaise cars and i like it. Even more underpowered

they are 2-3 times more, those are cheap because one one wants old hearse. Ppl here are very religious and thinks hearses are hunted or some shit. I almost get my ass kicked out of house for even talking about buying one

The 305 is adequate for the B-body sedan, too underpowered for the heavier wagon which needed the 350 but unfortunately lost it during the second energy crisis.

      >second energy crisis
is sad, those b body are cool but 80s all are underpowered. I came across olds diesel one years ago and it strangely run. Underpowered engines are not that bad in europe tho, because those cars are generally too big for euro roads and you need to be extra careful driving them. Going over 55 in one on some one lane roads is a death wish

For that you could just get a Suburban for all the 12 mpg V8 goodness you want and it had better visibility and interior room than the B-body wagons. It was already becoming popular in the Midwest during the '70s as a family hauler.

Ford temporarily shelved the big block 460 (by now limited to trucks) during the second energy crisis while GM continued to offer them despite rather scant sales. Chrysler sadly dropped 440 engines in 1978 and also destroyed the tooling as they didn't think they'd ever need it again.

These most commonly have the 350; the I6 and 305 were too underpowered and the 454 was a gigantic gas hog only useful for towing a boat or trailer. They began offering diesels too in the early 80s but they weren't very good and also cripplingly slow as they weren't turbo ones.

Agree with the other anon to go with the Chevy engine. The 305 is slow as a sunflower but well known and documented. I love the Rocket to bits but some of them were definite stinkers, like the 350 diesel, the 403, and the 307. And while Olds engines have a surprising amount of parts interchange among themselves, as a Euro you certainly won't be finding many of them to pull parts from (and of course the 307 has to be an odd duck with less interchange) and the aftermarket for Rockets has just never been there compared to the Chevy small block.

      >Chevy small block
even here there are some 305 leaing around and they are cheap. Many ppl import old american cars and swap them for more modern engines, even my friend buddy have one 305 after he swap some squarebody. I don't even know they come with olds v8 unit i see photos in add of one. I do some reacherch on parts and olds is lost case.

They were only putting the 350 in police cars in the '80s. Also the B-bodies got de-contented; a lot of the more cool and interesting option packages they offered in the '70s were dropped.

In 70s they offer some crazy engine spec for europe. I saw '73 biscayne wagon with inline 6 250. Imagine biggest wagon in history with 90hp engine. It was desmoged and i think they were used by US military.
