      can mac do sshfs? the only reason i use smb/nfs because it's highly compatible. but on my linux machines i just use sshfs

        Yeah, you just need to install macfuse

        It works fine in my experience, be warned macOS leaves a behind a shit ton of ._ files. It also sometimes refuses to dismount and the only way I manage to dismount it is with diskutil umount force /path/to/disk
