Which phone are you using OP? Isn't this only a thing for some higher-end Samsung devices?

What are some pain points that you've come across?

I like that this one has a long, detachable cable. I'm planning to hide the dock under my desk with the rest of the wiring.

    >usb dock to turn cheap phone into a pc
    cool idea.
the downsides are that the phone is not easily upgradable and repairable, and in most cases it won't turn on if it has a dead battery, even if it's plugged to a charger.
and it's limited to proprietary 'apps' to do anyhting unless you install a linux distribution on it, at which point it would be more convenient to use a small sbc instead, unless you have specific use cases that needs the phones hardware.

how the fuck is this more convenient than carrying a small laptop which can do way more stuff than this garbage?

      NTA
but you can do calls and sms on a phone.
I agree that a small laptop would be better for basically all other use cases

There aren't many, but you have few models which have WWAN card, there are few thinkpads models with it

If you really want to, m.2 wwan cards can go into any pc with a free pcie slot.

never had a laptop with wwan, but how would you jerry rig the antenna if the pc doesn't natively have it, an external solution?

ok, then I would definitely use one of those instead of a phone, unless I needed the small portable size of a normal smartphone.

It's really not much more convenient than just syncing your documents with a cloud service or to your local network with syncthing or just homegroup. Novelty aside it's bad value when you consider servicing, device lifespan, upgradeability. The only people who use docks don't actually no anything about hw or do any serious work.
