There were more Christians until recently. No thanks to Protestants who helped (and continue to help) israelites displace both Christian and Muslim populations.

The figure of Buddha became integrated into Hinduism, the figure of Jesus became interested into Islam. In essence the figure became integrated into the dominant belief/culture.

This board is full of massive retards.

And why did he say that? Canonically, He was whining about being bullied by family. There is no theological significance to this verse.

Buddhism was a relatively minor sect until Ashoka patronized it. A few generations later it was still a minor sect, it just had a massive missionary effort outside of India. The tl;dr is that Brahmins are deeply entrenched into Hindu society and the Buddhist monks simply couldn't disentangle them from it. Socially, Buddhist monks fulfill the same role as Brahmins (officiating weddings, funerals, and baby naming, doing all sorts of rituals, exorcisms, acting as repositories of knowledge, etc). The problem is that Buddhist monks are also ascetics who live out in the woods, whereas Brahmins live in houses, palaces, temples, etc, and are far more easily at hand.

After Ashoka, Buddhism's power-base in India, at least as far as funding, was Gandhara, which got destroyed when Islam came along. It would be centuries before the area would recover economically, and with that loss of funding the Buddhist monasteries in India withered (they had long ago lost the local laity supporting them).

At a meta level, there was simply far more interest in Buddhism in SEA, Central Asia, China, Japan, etc. In all of these areas Buddhism could fill a niche that was already partially filled in India. There just wasn't as much gain from prioritizing India as there was the rest of Asia.

Christianity was in a similar position until Constantine invented his own sect to patronize.

      >Gandhara
LOL no, that petered out as a major base of support by the Guptas. Buddhism and Jainism were far and away the most popular sects of Indian religion for most of late antiquity and the "Dark Ages" (which are India's golden age at the Gupta and post-Gupta period). The thing that actually unseated Buddhist power was the Bhakti movement - although your point about greater Brahmin integration into society does stand.

Buddhism was not spread by Siddharth (Gutam Buddha) in his time in India it was about preaching the way of the world ONE OFHIS FAMOUS SERMON IS CALLED SERMON IN BENARAS a religious city in India the easter side was much disorganised and uncivilised so he spread his teachings through his followers so it started to take a form of cult(not in a bad way) and being called by his people given name from bush to buddhism its earlier and orignal teaching are not distinct from hinduism .Fun fact the great Indian king Ashoka turned to buddhism popularly thought to have converted after his infamous war of Kaling but some believe it could very well be before that incident he adopted Buddhism but his both son and daughter spend their life in preaching buddhism and non violence the whole eastern side is hevaley infulenced and follows Buddhism their population is comparitvly less and in government of Ashokas son and daughter the king of Sri Lanka also converted to Buddhism in todays time in 2009 their cover even passed official language bill giving benefit to Buddhists and those who speak Sinhalais discriminating against their biggest minority group of Tamil people.PEOPLE IN INDIA FROM HINDU FAMILYS STILL KEEP THEIR CHILDS NAME SIDHART OUT RESPECT TO GAUTAM BUDH (AS IT WAS HIS ORIGNAL NAME) AND IS BELIVED TO BE AN AUSPICIOUS NAME

White Huns attacked Buddhist monasteries ~200-600 AD around the Afghan/Pakistan areas
Muslims attacked/ransacked/converted the same area but also deep into Northern India ~600-1000 AD
Buddhist religion depends upon monastic orders. When the monastic orders were genocided, it was impossible to recover.

    2. The revival of the Upanishad by Adi Sankara and Advaita Vedanta
    3. Hindus integrated Buddha into their own pantheon and claimed that Buddha was the 6th incarnation of Vishnu and that he taught the false dharma
