GNU/Linux is going downhill and I'm looking for a feasable alternate OS. I've been looking into OpenIndiana and BSD derivatives. My computer is capable of running GNU/Linux with only free drivers, so I'd like to ask if anyone has used one of these Operating systems and what you thought about it.
FreeBSD is the only viable alternative out of those options.
>GNU/Linux is going downhill
The only thing going downhill is your mental state. You probably can't use an OS without blue-haired androgynous creatures invading your brain. Seek help.
didn't mean to (You), but I agree with that post. FreeBSD as a desktop in the current year is somewhat like Linux 10 years ago. Still the only real alternative to Linux.
OpenBSD also works great. I used it as my main OS for a few years. NetBSD is also a good alternative.
Is OpenIndiana even still alive? Their ZFS implementation dates to literally like 2008 or something.
OpenIndiana is dead.
The BSDs are your primary option unles you want something more esoteric like Haiku or I guess Serenity.
How usable is haiku? I tried to check it out but pretty much every website caused the browser to throw a JS error and crash. I guess I could only browse sites that don't use any JS at all but then I might as well not even turn my PC on.
What do you mean OpenIndiana is dead? Didn't they have a release recently?
>GNU/Linux is going downhill
No it isn't
>GNU/Linux is going downhill
wtf do you mean?
I'm sure he's worried about systemd and Rust
Rust is great and systemd is 100% open source which is more than I can say about the kernel. There is a 100% Linux kernel but it's hard to run. The Linux kernel has had binary blobs since the late 90s. Op is a fag.
FreeBSD is the best of all BSDs when it comes to software and support. Maybe check it out.
>GNU/Linux is going downhill
use slackware
>My computer is capable of running GNU/Linux with only free drivers
What did he mean by this?
>I'm looking for a feasable alternate OS.
No you're not.
Try Haiku and Serenity OS.
>Serenity OS
>mfw no iso
Ah, so you are still here? And yet:

And yet 2:

not clicking thise
What could possibly go wrong?
I really hope AROS gets the hardware support it deserves. Especially for AMD cards.
Yes. AROS is underrated.
if you dont depend on linux exclusive software, or use the newest hardware openbsd is a good secure alternative
