Bought this instead of a macbook. Now I have buyers remorse. What do?
I need it for programming. I have two options:
- wsl2 (which eats up 8gb of ram)
- installing loonix (all distros and DEs are pure shit)
fucking hell. I paid 1k shekels for this shit, and it won't be even usable for me. How do I kill myself?
You know it’s possible to limit WSL memory usage right?
>You know it’s possible to limit WSL memory usage right?
yeah, but I probably need the 8 gb, since I'd be running node on it.
The moment you went full retard wasn't buying a Windows machine, it was buying a machine you can't upgrade the RAM on
LULZ has been railing on about the Framework laptop for years now, it's not our fault you missed the memo.
Arch, WSL is a bad emulator
>Arch
thats not a DE idiot. I don't have problems with linux distros, but win linux DEs
Use KDE or Cinnamon
>KDE
I tried it 6 months ago on my desktop. It was pure shit. I doubt they fixed it in the meanwhile.
Cinamon seems like outdated shit.
You're fishing for attention at this point macOS is a unstable piece of shit that sufferers with basic shit like external monitor scaling and multi monitor support.
Wish you the best though
>You're fishing for attention
nope. I use macos on a desktop hackintosh, with 2 external monitors. It does "just werk".
Also, it being unix like simplifies installing dev tools. I'll still be doing 90% of my work on the hackintosh, I am just wondering if I'll be able to recreate the same work env on windows (or loonix).
Also, muscle memory might fuck me up. Windows and Mac swap the position of the Ctrl key. But I guess I can fix that with auto hot key or something like that.
mac lets you reassign them in prefs now
>mac lets you reassign them in prefs now
I know retard. And It's not "now", it's been that way forever.
Also, I want to reasign windows to be mac like. Pressing the Ctrl button is much harder with pinky than with thumb.
You can make any UI you want in KDE unironically read about it there are premade themes and tools already.
>You can make any UI you want in KDE unironically
yeah, but it was buggy with gayland last time I used it. And the gtk apps looked better in KDE than the native apps.
Also, this fucking triggers me the hardest. Having apps that are not built with the same ui library.
>wayland
So do you not browse this board?
>So do you not browse this board?
barely.. sometimes I visit the llmg, to see if there is anything new.
this board is full of midwitts and generally bad advise.
>uses wayland though
Don't want to hear shit you have to say if you can't read a basic linux thread, wayland as well as modern gnome is shit and has lead to the majority of negative linux outcomes for first time users.
Don’t make it a huge deal. Just sell it and buy a MacBook. No need for the melodrama
>Just sell it and buy a MacBook.
I can't sell it, retard. I'd lose 20% on it, maybe more. The fuck would someone buy a laptop from me for the full price?
>Don’t make it a huge deal. Just sell it and buy a MacBook. No need for the melodrama
Also, the above laptop has 16gb. Even if WSL steals 8GB from me, I still get 8GB, which I'd have on Macos.
I guess I'll use windows then.. fuck it. I am already using hackintosh since forever. Maybe windows could be fun.
Maybe if Apple weren't greedy israelites, and sold a Macbook with 16gb ram and 500 gb ssd for 1200 shekels, I'd have bought one. Maybe microsoft isn't that bad... I hope.
can't you just install hackintosh on it? I don't speak weird iphone app compile os.
>can't you just install hackintosh on it?
on older versions, yes.. but newer cpus are not supported anymore, since applel broke up with Intel. Or, you'd have to buy a laptop with discrete gpu, but even then, almost no gpu is supported. Amd 6 and 5 series, like the 6800 are only supported.
yes, you.. I am talking about myself. for me Macos is the preferred OS. Windows would do too, but I don't like using it. Linux would be perfect, if it had a decent DE.
>for me Macos is the preferred OS
then why did you purchase a non-mac laptop
fucking weird thread
>then why did you purchase a non-mac laptop
I am israeli. I hate parting with shekels. It hurts my soul.
Also, mac gives you a soldered 256 gb ssd. With my usage, it would probably die within 4-5 years. Then I would have to buy the 1tb version, and the macbook would cost me 2600 euro shekels.
>256 GB
>With my usage
probably some retarded ass games and porn. ngmi
>installing loonix (all distros and DEs are pure shit)
so let me get this straight:
you made a retarded decision and regret it
and instead of trying an alternative that will potentially save you a thousand bycks, you double down in your retard decisions
you sound incapable of self-reflection and learning from mistakes and i hope your life is a miserable one
I tried loonix 6 months ago for fun. Didn't have any fun. Tried multiple DE's, and all were shit.
Tried KDE first, then Gnome, then the Deepin DE. All had issues. The best of them was Gnome, but I had blurry fonts when using fractional scaling on gayland.
Also, linux itself is not the issue. The package managers, the performance, ram usage, boot time... it's a perfect OS, except it looks like shit and every DE is pure shit.
I saw some talk about a Rust based DE. Is this one shit as well?
>I'm too retarded to use a real men OS
>So I have to come to this colombian basket weaving forum to instigate a flamewar that's literally the single one (1) rule in the sticky
I fucking hate americans so fucking much bros...
How much are these pajeets getting paid to shill $THE_PRODUCT on online forums?
I have a M2 Macbook Pro (14" 16gb memory) and honestly I hate it
FUCK Mac
stop being a bitch and take 3 hours to set up a nice I3 config
>uses a stock photo instead of a photo he's taken himself
Press X to doubt.
>Press X to doubt.
waiting for delivery, don't hvae it yet...
I'd prefer native loonix... but I doubt I can get it work the way I want. I liked Unity back in the day, but nowadays all DE's seem like utter shit.
I bought the 16gb one. It should be enough for frontend dev.
meanwhile chrome using up 32GB to load one tab
LTSC IoT + WSL2 or a VM
I have a surface book go 2 and I like it. It runs Linux beautifully as does Windows. I really like the build quality. For a $400 laptop I really really like it. Contrast that to my m2 mba which I had to mod, you can’t even run a vm to get Windows compatibility. You’re stuck with Mac OS and only Mac OS. I tried running Linux on it to no avail, I don’t know how people figured it out or if Apple started to lock the firmware. I can run Mac OS via hackintosh on the surface laptop coincidently. If you want a decent all around laptop, I suggest picking one up on the used market.
>If you want a decent all around laptop, I suggest picking one up on the used market.
If I wanted to hackintosh a laptop, I'd have to buy outdated hardware. Apple doesn't support the new intel integrated gpus.
https://pop.system76.com/
Is this distro any good? I am thinking about giving it a try. Or should I just use manjaro + gnome?
is it intel evo certified? idk but mine is, and it is a zenbook with an i7 and 16 gigs and so far this is a great laptop. I originally fall in love with in everyday, except for bad kernel configuration and lack of support for my sound card, it runs Linux (arch - X11 - DWM) like butter.
The only type of intensive load I do is either
1) compiling multiple relatively small project
2) compiling a big project
My job is testing software I locally build and writing exploits, improvements etc. The 12th gen i7 does the job just fine (although I needed more ram at least 32 gigs).
If I didn't have to do that, I would gladly get a macbook.
bought the amd version. the cpu is https://www.amd.com/en/products/apu/amd-ryzen-5-7530u
The cpu seems decent enough. Not as good as the m1 though.
the laptop is so freating thin that it heats up a lot, I never booted winbloat once in the machine, but for as long Ive been daily driving linux, it does heat up a lot but then again, the CPU utilization is not large at all. And I don't know why
how's the screen though? and trackpad?
2.8k OLED is unsurprisingly what it is, fucking amazing, I've switched from having two 28" monitors and one 30* ultrawide to a 14" laptop, and it was worth it. Once you see the OLED, you can't go back.
>and trackpad?
I admit, at first I needed to do a lot of tinkering and patching around libinput and Xorg, but as of now, it works flawlessly. So smooth and responsive.
>2.8k OLED
fuck, I bought the non-oled... the oled one costs as much as the macbook, and in that case, I'd just buy applel
>I'd just buy applel
idk if you've read my previous comments or didn't catch the main point, I work in compiler writing, kernels and I build new commits released of large projects everyday and test/benchmark to find bugs, or find a blank slot for improvement. I want to must be able to run linux/*BSD, or I wouldn't shift my eye right or left once, and buy a macbook over anything else.
>installing loonix (all distros and DEs are pure shit)
Install Manjaro XFCE + i3wm, and you've a solid laptop. This is what I did for the HP x360 I bought back in 2016, and got me through a CS bachelor
>i3wm
I am probably too retarded to know how to use a tilling window manager. Who the fuck will learn all the shortcuts to manipulate they layouts.
Who the fuck falls for le thin meme in current year?
>I can't develop in windows, I must have a *nix-like environment
why?
>why?
too much overhead in windows. Last time I tried to get rsync to work on windows, it took me 2 fucking hours, and I had to copy paste dll files manually.
Could've gotten this one for less money
https://www.microcenter.com/product/648702/hp-victus-16-e1163nr-161-gaming-laptop-computer-platinum-collection-mica-silver
I have it, it's good, pretty good battery life, handles games worth playing just fine.
trackpad is not in the middle. my ocd can't handle that.
Trackpad is slightly towards the left, but it's big enough that you don't notice, as for responsiveness, no complains there
Upgradability is also great on this thing
So difficult to pick up a laptop these days, I agree
I discarded all the ones with small trackpads, and with trackpads of center. didn't even consider buying them, even though many of them had great prices
It's incredible how retarded those laptop manufacturers are. All they need to do is copy macbook design, like asus did.
get a chromebook
