Is this true?
Are engine break in periods a thing of the past?

No. It’s all about saving money on dealer provided maintenance until you’re out of warranty. There might be some truth to it, but not the “oh yeah, 15k between oil changes is totally fine now!” level.

Sounds like you have more money than brains. Enoy it.

Also, imagine believing anything a car salesman says.

When I went on a guided tour of the production plant we saw the engine manufacturing as well and they told us that they pull 1% of all engines for hot tests, hooking them up to a dyno etc and running them for 20-40 minutes at varying revs and ranges. I asked them if this doesn't damage the engine if it was just freshly built, after all I was told to keep revs below 4k for the first thousand miles, but they told me that that's something they only tell new buyers so they will get used to the car first before redlining it and driving it into a wall

        >that's something they only tell new buyers so they will get used to the car first before redlining it and driving it into a wall
yeah that's pretty much all there is to it. the actual break-in period is like a couple minutes and is done at the factory.

Idk much about sports cars but in agriculture new diesel engine or rebuilt ones will undergoes a breakin period of max rev under load.

Break in is one of those timeless internet arguments among boomers who know their stuff. The most confident ones tend to say something like get the fluids flowing an go ahead and rev away and then change the fluids and have at it. But the manufacturers wouldn't specify long break in periods in writing if they weren't confident that the result would bolster some reputation for reliability.

Take your pick. At least one person probably stomped on it between the factory floor and transporting it on and off all the different things until it got where it's sitting at the dealer, and then where it sits at the dealer when you come to pick it up. I'd personally go for the fluid change schedule, and going easy at first until you get used to it is probably a good idea an not bad to help break in things that don't get worn in to place pretty quick.

I'm pretty sure the manufacturers just put it in to help them deny lemon claims.

            Anonymous

Sounds like a good idea. They don't want spurious lemon claims any more than people want to get stuck with lemons. Point is they wouldn't put it in writing if they weren't willing to bet that a long breakin wouldn't result in premature engine failures.

Bro that's pussy shit. Porsche might half ass it but manufacturers with real stress tests will test their engines by running them at redline for a month.

    >Are engine break in periods a thing of the past?
It is still better to let it break in. The bearings inside the engine have to "run in" first, it is better safe than sorry. 30k oil changes - I would never wait so long between oil changes unless you baby it. The oil will age faster the harder you push the engine, and lose the ability to properly lubricate the engine. If the car is driven hard, do them all 10k, and if you plan to track it better change it out after every track day. The dealers just say 30k so the people believe it - it is somewhat like advertisement, just like the ZF transmission that suddenly have a "lifelong" oil filling by BMW. They don't give a shit if the car lasts 200kk or 500.

Oil has changed since the 3k mile recs. Good oil does 35k+ now. I'd go less on a boosted engine though.

don't be a moron and change the oil every 6k miles, specially if you drive the car hard. also get some good quality oil for it.

Not really, unless they run them in in a factory now (in which case enjoy your new used car) you still should do it, they probably just know their client base well enough to not even bother to expect it.

Depends on the vehicle. Car engines are actually stress tested well before actually being put into a vehicle, so it isn’t all that odd

Just keep in mind that 60-70% of dealer profit comes from the service department. They have a vested interest in 'caring" for your car, so the sooner you break it, the better off they are. Just use common sense.

I was walking out of the mall last night (they do still exist in nice places) and this pickup I want to think late 90s but probably early 2000s when the start/stop thing was getting popular superceded the body updates pulls to a red light.

What did to my wondering ears did appear but the sound of a bog standard starter chugging from your average kind of not the best but enough battery starting it back up. Early implementation I guess. But it didn't even m ake any sense. He was stopped at a red light and wasn't even making an attempt to move. Was it time to cycle the water pump or something lol? Did he change the music on his iphone?

Implying start-stop somehow "heat cycles" the engine. You ricers need to fricking die I hate reading the shit you write.

Yes. It's not 1965 anymore. The engines are fine from the factory. 30k oil change is beyonf moronic though. Not even if it can stay lubricated. It will be dirty as frick.
