I'm still going to do it, but why the frick is it that big of an issue to people? Is it just the local morons near me or is there some underlying issue/annoyance from owning a manual car that's not that apparent to me?

To a Euro this literally doesn't make any sense. Parents usually push kids to buy manuals because they are cheaper to run, cheaper to insure, cheaper to fix if the child fricks it, and a good learning lesson. They are also legit more fuel efficient that automatics 99.999% of the time.

        >They are also legit more fuel efficient that automatics 99.999% of the time.
I like manuals but this is bullshit for almost any car that is less than 10 years old.

Nope - manufacturers simply lie about mpg, by suggesting non-ideal shift timing to the official testers, which they do to sucker people into buying the more expensive automatic because "it'll pay for itself in efficiency". All the mpg-logging websites boomer wizards use agree that manuals get better real-world mpg to autos, including CVTs. If it's a fluid-coupling, it's inefficient.

Look, I'll be the first one to say manuals aren't the best at everything, but you can definitely get better mpgs from them.

manuals are far more efficient than 90s torque converter autos, but most new(er) cars use DCTs which are way more efficient than torque converters, and nowadays they definitely give manuals a run for their money when it comes to fuel economy. Smiles per mile on the other hand is a different story

Vocabulary word nerd moment: They were trying to "dissuade" you from buying one, meaning steer you against that option. To use "persuade me from" means the same thing, but it's a clunky way to say it. It's not wrong, though.

I drove autos until I got my license because that makes it easier in the US. I got the hang of a manual two times around the neighborhood and I've loved it ever since. Some people take longer. And yes I did my fair share of lurching and stalling along the way. Don't fret it.

ehhh I got if for free so really I'd have to compare the cost of the repair to getting a new car, which in the current market just fixing it probably wouldn't be a bad finical move.

I'm also not a poorgay anymore, I'm just trying to get the most out of it to stack money. Guess I'll start shopping around for rebuilts. I've done clutches before, so I can't imagine replacing an auto is any harder. If I can snap a rebuilt for 1-2k it could be worth it if it gives me a couple more years out of the car.

      >Manual driving lessons would be an absolute waste of money.
this is trash advice. 80 dollars for 1 hour of manual lessons was the difference for me from stalling over and over and over again to being able to drive the car I wanted off the lot at the dealers (albeit awkwardly) and take it home. You cannot learn how a clutch pedal feels and what the bite in your car feels like from a youtube video. You can have someone explain it for hours and hours nothing matters until you get in a car and try it yourself. The first hour is the most brutal in the learning process. You will absolutely be better off investing a little money to frick up in a controlled environment first before you try the real thing on the car you will buy

        Anonymous

Yeah this. Here the first 5 or so driving lessons are just learning to pull away without stalling. I was still making mistakes until my 7th lesson when it finally just clicked.

Lmao bro you don't need driving lessons. When I bought my first manual car, I drove it home no issue. I stalled a few times but who cares that's part of the learning process and you'll get it down with time.

If you think you need to just watch a few youtube videos before to understand what's actually going on in the transmission and how to operate it accordingly.

      >Only downside is if you have to drive in traffic.

Since this is the designated manual vs auto troony thread, figured I'd ask here. I've only driven an NA miat, where the shift rod is directly controlling the gearbox. How different does it feel using a modern cable operated shifter in FWD cars? Asking because I'm thinking of getting a GR corolla down the line

      Anonymous

Feels just a tad sloppier although no one ever adjusts the cables, so doing so might inprove it a lot. My sister as a cable shifter car and for commuter purposes it's perfectly fine.
Also some 90's might have solid connection to the trans, at least Honda's of that era did, idk about Toyotas though.

      Anonymous

The shift action is a bit lighter and there's zero NVH through the shifter, but if done correctly like Honda for instance, cable shifters can feel really good

      Anonymous

expect some mild slop that you may be able to tighten up in some way.
in my civic it's the spherical bushing for the left-right movement that gives the most amount of slop. after that it's things that feel like slop but are for noise/vibration damping; the shifter mounting bushings (soft rubber), and the cable end bushings(soft rubber/plastic).

Mentally prepare for the mistakes. You will frick up sometimes and the car will rev and throw you about. The people you are with will try to throw you off and make you want to get rid of it. It's ok, it's part of the process. Keep focus and practise.
You will understand why nobody you know likes it, but that will make it so much more satisfying when you get the hang of it.

  28. 2 years ago

the car isn't a piece of ownership to be flaunted and proudly displayed nowadays.
Just feels like the consensus in europe at least, is going towards being ashamed of owning one and as such, the less you interact with one and treat it more like nothing else but a vehicle from point a to point b, the better.
This is really obvious with the intense disdain the proletariat have for manuals, it requires slightly more thinking in general than just putting an auto into D and holding the gas pedal all the way to work. As we all know, thinking is bad and the more you let machines and the elite do it for you, the better.
