Good Old Neon is a short story, so start with that.

After that, read §22 of Pale King. It's a self-contained novella.

The Black person is unbearable. Only a slave could read him and feel anything at all. The high school bullies really did a number on him.

His essay on usage in American English is great. It's from the Consider the Lobster collection I'm pretty sure.

    Paul Auster Shill

His short short stories are incredible, "The Soul Is Not a Smithy", "Girl with Curious Hair" and "Suicide as a Sort of Present" are some of my favorites.

I haven't read IJ yet (perhaps I'll give it a go this year, I own a copy already)

The Pale King was left unfinished, but he arranged what there was to arrange for his wife to find and (presumably) publish. It is also one of my favourite works. It's beautiful.
