Are lithium car batteries worth it yet?

Had my first OEM battery last 5 years when i got the car, second one is like 3 years i think or just under which feels shit. Already at 250/550 CCA

These lithiums seems dank, 7KG, 1300CCA and has a reserve button that you press and it can do 300CCA with reserved cells for when it's flat

I bought one like this. I’ve been running chink lifepo4 batteries for about 8 years. The a123 cells were great. I had a tiny 4 cell battery about 1/8th the size of an OEM battery that ran my 240sx fine. Later I started using a smaller odyssey size lifepo4 for awhile. It died after 2-3 years and now I’m using one like in your pic. Cost about $300 (costs haven’t changed much). Internal BMC seems better. That’s the only way you really kill these, is with improper charging. Keep it topped up with a trickle charger so you aren’t tempted to use a lead acid charger or something stupid to recharge a dead one. Engine startup is much better than lead acid, weight is much better, but they only make sense if you’re trying to drop weight from the car.

The only application I've seen them be worth triple the cost of an AGM lead acid battery is on motorcycles. Some of the AGM's that I've had, have failed within one year on my bike, even after being hooked to a trickle charger in a heated room during winter.

The current LiPo I have had a 1/2 more cranking amps and you can leave it sitting for months and it'll crank right up.

yeah ignore more cranking amps, lighter, longer life span yep only applies to bikes

AGMs on my cars work perfectly fine for what they're asked of, I don't need to spend 600$ on a battery if its going into a 95 f150 or 04 Mazda 3.

I've only had problems with the tiny AGMs on my bikes so that's the only place I've seen a benefit for litihium instead.

Lithium is only good for hardcore cranking amps, which is why it's banned on airplanes and catches fire and all that. It's not your main solid and steady battery. Motorcycles you plow snow with maybe, or maybe get it topped up through the winter. But for cars just stick to lead acid. AGM is gay and a profit tool. You're not on a boat or something lol.

So even texas gets a mad cold snap once a decade or few, and what we learn from that is that battery manufacturers sell certain grades of batteries that don't expect to withstand the cold down there (they even have some saying like "winter batteries" or whatever.)

Up north we've never heard of that because the manufactureres sell batteries that don't shit the bed as much in the cold because we get cold on a yearly cycle. So what should you do? Two tips.

    1. Don't pay too much for it. Magic batteries are snake oil and AGM for instance is gay and not appropriate.
    2. Buy a jump pack and make sure to keep it charged up. That way if you wind up with a gimp battery then you can restart your car and drive it to a place that sells batteries and don't buy that one again. ezpz.

Also, don’t get lipo, they’re a fire hazard and you still get raped. Just get lifepo4 batteries. Downside is 10-15% less capacity vs a LiPo, upside is that they don’t start on fire when damaged. If regulators were worth a shit they’d ban LiPo EVs.

lol bull fricking shit. AGM is still a sealed lead acid battery no way it lasts that long

I'm running a chink lifepo4 battery in my 02 A8 (D2). Being in yurop, it's naturally a diesel (3.3 BiTDI). Previously it ate batteries every 2 years, because diesels need lolhuge cca to start, even though it doesn't get worse here than -20C (don't know what is that in freedom/eagles or whatever). When I first installed it, I thought it would ruin the starter, it started like it was jumped. Now as it discharged to a normal level, it's just starting quickly in any conditions from freezing to scorching, even if I had the engine off heater or the engine off fan on while I run surveillance with the dashcam.

Especially with modern shit like start stop I can only wonder why isn't this standard equipment already.

They're absolutely unnecessary on a daily driver, AGM is a huge improvement if you're looking to upgrade.

Lithium batteries are useful on vehicles that are rarely driven, where you can't use battery tenders, and/or high cranking amps are needed.

I'm looking at getting one for my motorcycle for those reasons, and because the starter and spark system don't like cold starting on the carb without starter fluid.

I've got that same one in my daily, pic related. It was worth it for me because I use the car for camping and run a camping fridge directly from the cranking battery since I don't have any room to put a dual battery system. It's especially useful to me because of the inbuilt reserve/backup option, if the fridge ever drains it completely.

I got the 40ah ( plus 10ah reserve) version and so far the longest I ran my fridge off it between engine starts was 2 and a bit days. Car still started no problem. Have been driving the car with it for nearly 2 years, never had a problem. Charging directly from a regular dumb alternator. To get this much capacity in lead or AGM would be close over 20kgs and wouldn't fit in the place I have it, this one weighs like...5kg maybe? Easily pick it up with one hand.

The way I see it, literally the only downside when choosing lifepo4 over lead for a car battery is the initial outlay. That's it. Even the long term cost is cheaper since you *should* replace a lead battery every so many years. Cheapest lead based battery where I am is between $100 and $200.
Usable capacity, depth of discharge, weight, CCA, voltage drop, operating voltage...lifepo4 kicks leads ass in every conceivable way.

Unless these have some circuitry to protect the cells in these, it's a fire waiting to happen. Lead acid is very happy to sit up to 14V while lithium batteries are not quite so flexible.

      >Lead acid is very happy to sit up to 14V while lithium batteries are not quite so flexible.

bro you literally charge lithium at 14.6V and the float is 13.6 usually. Car batteries dont usually sit at even 13V. Cranking batteries aren't deep discharge batteries

        Anonymous

They must have the circuitry built in now. Worked at a battery shop when these first started coming out and you had to use an adapter that would limit the charge voltage so it wouldn't fry the lithium. Nobody cared though since they were mostly used on motorcycles and other small shit that changing all that out wasn't an issue.

they have always had a BMS to handle charging individual cells and to protect them

I've got the one in OPs photo, been driving it 2 years connected to a regular alternator, it has charging circuitry built in plus under/over voltage cut off and short circuit protection. The only thing it does do which is less than ideal is if I've run the battery down a bit with the fridge, upon engine startup the battery will pull max current from the alternator even at idle which leads to belt squeal sometimes. My alternator vee belt doesn't live for very long, either.

            Anonymous

If that's a common thing, it might put your alternator to an early death. You could wire a power resistor (which could take the form of something as inexpensive as a light bulb or just a long run of jumper cable stitched together until it acts as a sufficient current limiter) between the alternator and the battery.

The problem comes in if you really need max amps out of your alternator continuous rather than being able to use the battery as a buffer, so unless you want to do something clever with a dual battery setup, or a relay or even just a cool big switch or underhood plug to bypass the current limit, you'd have to make some decisions. But probably not decisions you need to make until and unless you discover that it does in fact put belts and alternators to an early grave.

Tell you what I picked up a $40 lithium jump pack from the wallyworld the other year (cheapest such thing available witihin reasonable carless travel distance) and I've been rather impressed both with its programming to deal with adjusting to and reporting different kinds of faults as well as how hard it kicks in and cranks as needed for someting like the size of two decent hamburgers.

It claims only 3 cranks per recharge unless it's an emergency, which is probably about right for something of its size in order to avoid an even shorter battery life than it might really have. But that's pretty handy for the cost. I wouldn't run lithium in anything short of a special project, either. That thing and a fancy motorcycle battery is weight savings enough in the 90s/00s sense of it.
