There are about 300 Audi dealerships in the US. About 40% of them are in Cali, NY, NJ, and PA. If you live anywhere other than the West Coast or the Northeast and especially if you don't live in a major metro, you might be lucky if you have *one* dealer within 100 miles of you.

had an 02 with same drivetrain. on mine the water pump went out first, got that replaced and also did timing belt at the same time. A few months later my younger brother scraped the shit out of the transmission pan on a shitty street and he drove it for a few blocks back home leaking oil all the way. We got that fixed but the first gear was never the same. Eventually we swapped out the tranny and the engine exploded a week later lol. was a fun sleeper car at the time, but never again

Yes. They're constant problem cars. I have a 2010 A4Q, hair over 100k miles. Even when it was in its prime it drank oil like a recovering alcoholic at an open bar. Had to replace the timing chain twice, the timing chain cover twice, serpentine belt thrice, oil sensor, fix constant idling issues, etc., etc., etc. and some of that was post warranty. Now my mechanic tells me I've got leaks in the main seal, vacuum pump, and more than likely not I'm also looking at piston ring failure and a dying turbo - so that's a full rebuild job which would be three or four times what the car would even be worth now if it was in top condition. I'll be lucky if I can find someone to take it for enough to recoup the new tires I put on it this year.

Add to this that unless you have a VW dealership with a service shop in your town, it's hard as fuck to find a shop that will even work on European cars anymore.

I don't have a lot of regrets in my life, but buying this car is one of them. I will NEVER buy another European car.

Depends. Older audis are toxic. Morerecent ones (like 2015+) are better. The main problem with these cars is people don't maintain them properly.

Also stay away from the 2.0t they are putting in everything now. The 3.0 t is far more reliable. If you can afford a 4.0t car make sure you do the turbo oil screen recall asap.

If a car comes into my bay with an engine issue 90% of the time it's the 2.0T. Sure the oil consumption issues aren't as bad as they used to be but they still leak from the thermostat housings like clockwork

What would a rear main vacuum leak look like or affect?
My tsi is leaking oil all through the boost system. Seems like the head pressure is out of whack (too high). I replaced the PCV and checked the turbo waste care but just keep getting underboost code, low all in the intercooler. Doesn't even seem like turbo is running at all, like limp mode. Trying to check if the intercooler is cracked or something

            Oil all in the intercooler*

            Anonymous

If you’re getting constant underboost warnings the turbo is probably fucked. Easiest way to check is try flooring it. If the turbo’s boned the check engine will come on every time you try and get full acceleration.

Rear main is going to be noticeable leakage while it’s under pressure and you’ll usually get noticeable staining under the car when you park after a drive, but little or no burning smell or smoke. You’ll be using about a quart every 300-400 miles or so. If it’s more than that you might be looking at failures with the piston rings.

If you’ve got a 2.0T the three biggest failure points are the timing chain the turbo and the pistons and I’d guess about 75% of the Audis I’ve seen suffer problems with all three by the time they hit 80-120K

How did you check the waste gate? Honestly just sounds like your turbo is toast. See if there is any play on the impeller. If there is, then no surprise theres oil in the boost system, but again, turbo is probably toast.
The rear main vacuum leak will cause a lean condition and your car will run rough at idle. If its a big enough leak itll run rough at most rpms. This one is a bit harder to pinpoint since the rear main isnt accessible without separating the engine and transmission. Its a pretty common issue on vw ea888 so if you cant find vacuum leaks in the exterior engine, rear main is a reasonable guess. If you have a smoke machine youll see the smoke come out from between the engine and transmission

              Anonymous

I actually had the turbo replaced, didn't help. I can slightly check the linkage for the waste gate under the car by moving it and seeing if it's loose or seized. I have the old turbo out and the waste gate was fine there too. I also ran idle and played with the oil cap and it's running a noticable but slight vacuum there (which is good?) so I was wrong about too high pressure. Again I already replaced the pcv which is known to be troublesome
Something made the car rough as shit, consume tons of oil (it doesn't leak while sitting), and give me no power. I don't know how much of this is connected.
It was throwing lean codes but I replaced the sparks (they were caked up bad) and it hasn't thrown a lean code again yet.
I've heard of the rear main seal going out and doesn't seem like something I can check at home easily.
But also they rolled my car off the alignment rack not too long ago (dumbass didn't pull parking brake)so I'm wondering if just the intercooler is cracked from that; but I also don't know why it's full of table spoons of oil all the time or how it's getting into the boost system. I'm in the process of pulling the radiator off to get to the intercooler
Sorry for wall of text of this fucking bullshit

Yes, take it from an Audi owner with several Audi owning friends.

My buddy had a 2013 Audi A3 with the 2.0L turbo. At around 45k miles, the engine blew. It was towed to the stealership and I went with him.

We arrived there and guess what we saw... 2 other near-new Audi's on lifts with their engines out. lol.

My parents have a 2015 Q5 and that thing burns oil like a mofo too now at only 85k miles. Now it's throwing a CEL as well.

Oh and my friend's sister with a VW that has the same 2.0L engine blew it at 120k miles.

These cars are a waste of money and time. They're for people who don't know any better or idiots who want to flex but don't actually have the money.

Depends on how old you're looking. Anything pre 2015 my knowledge is very limited. But depending on the motor, coolant leaks are easily the most common big repair. Before anything else check the coolant level and make sure it's good, and shine a light on the air dam under the engine. If it's wet be prepared for a thermostat housing and water pump job. The 4cylinders are particularly bad with leaking coolant. I've seen one leaking at as low as 47k miles. The next big thing is oil changes. These engines have issues with sludge if the oil isn't changed religiously. This isn't an Audi specific thing though as all turbo engines have these kinds of issues. Next is suspension bushings. We have multi link front and rear suspension with very large bushings. They soak up bumps very well but when they tear they creak like a MF and get all sloppy. The big one is the front suspension rear guide link bushing. Its huge and can get a lot of slop when the bushing tears. It really depends as I've seen some with really nice bushings even at 150k and some clapped out needing R&R at 100k but at that point I wouldn't be considering an Audi. If you really want one try getting something like a CPO we take care of any issues or imminent maintenance that these cars have before putting them out on the lot. These cars can get up to 100k without major issues pretty easily despite the memes and their interiors stay surprisingly nice as the people who own audis tend to take much better care of their cars than say a Honda or Chevy owner

While I think Audi is super fucking overrated by the average normaltard, I also think they're kinda too easily written off as "nothing but rebadged VWs for suckers" in car enthusiast circles. They've made some really cool stuff, besides the obvious Quattro.
Building a Golf on MAXIMUM ROIDS is cool. Stuffing a (slightly cost-cut variant of a) Lamborghini V10 into your big family sedan/wagon is cool. Slapping two turbos on it for shits and giggles is even better. The 4.2 is one of the nicest sounding V8s of all time, and even Jeremy Clarkson considers it one of his favorite engines, period. The 2.7TT is everything people love about the 1.8T, but +50%.

But I'm also aware of their flaws, and the flaws of the people that buy them. Not every engine is a chain-driven 4.2 40V but when something goes wrong it's often difficult and expensive, and while the people that drive them new don't care because they just get it fixed under warranty, the next owner is usually some clueless clout chasing fuck who has no idea how to maintain one and will ditch it onto some poor SOB once it inevitably develops some major issue.

Lease one. Buy one new, or well-maintained, low-mileage, single-owner CPO, and you'll have a great time. Anything beyond that is a crapshoot.

Those autistic sausage-eating homosexuals left a fucking millimeter of clearance between the timing chain cover and the fucking engine block... which means the only way to get at that part of the engine in most models is to pull the engine or pull off the front of the car.

Putting in a new timing chain cover and gasket is a pretty cheap and quick job compared to doing a complete replacement of the timing chain and tensioner... once you have access to the engine. But both jobs end up having nearly the same labor costs because 95% of the fucking work is getting access to the engine because you have to take apart the front of the goddamned car.

And let's not even get started on the autism of putting the car's battery in the fucking trunk of the car UNDER the spare wheel UNDER the tire kit UNDER the floor of the boot. Cold winter, you need a jump one morning, most cars you just pop the hood and pull up alongside someone. Audi - you sit there in the fucking freezing cold disassembling the rear of your fucking car.

Or the retarded fucking assembly for the sparks. What fucking genius at Audi thought that making that out of wafer thin hard plastic was a good idea? I could replace the plugs on my old 91 Mitsu in 15 minutes. The first time I replaced the plugs on the Audi it took an hour and a half and I cracked half the plastic clips.

        >No, man, you just, like, don't get it.
Working on my car used to be a joy. I could get parts anywhere for cheap, there wasn't any small repair or maintenance job I couldn't get done on a Saturday morning, and if there was ever a more serious issue, I could go to any shop in town and get the repairs turned around in a day or two for no more than a few hundred bucks.

Working on an Audi on your own is basically a no-go unless you have a fully-stocked auto shop in your garage. Finding parts is a pain, replacements and repairs are a nightmare, and shit constantly breaks down even if you're keeping up on maintenance.

Bmw started rotating their engines 180° audi style as well. Timing components are now sandwiched against the transmission. Lets hope they beefed up the vanos on those models

                >Plus Audisteer. Ugh. They're just such mom cars to me. The German Volvo if you will.
The newest cars have some weird bell housing design that pushes the engine back a little further without changing the quattro set up. Weight distribution is around 55/45 which is similar to a lot of FR cars like the Mustang and Z. If you add a stiffer rear sway bar and adjustable control arms for more front camber you won't be understeering anymore.

As to the way they look, personally I like the current understated design of the A4/A5/A6, you just need to get a color like blue, red or metallic gray/silver instead of white, black or (worst of all) matte primer gray

                Anonymous

Front/rear weight balance doesn't tell you everything, where that weight is located relative to the axles makes a massive difference. Audis have a lot of weight outside the axles, which makes them resist changes in rotation relatively heavily.

Newer cars don't really do it for me. My newest car is 9 years old. Anything with a tablet and no buttons for radio and hvac control is out. I do want to own a B/S58 car at some point however.
Not sure what it is about how Audis look that turns me off. I just see them as very sterile and tame, minus the R8 of course.

          >the only way to get at that part of the engine in most models is to pull the engine or pull off the front of the car
All. The word you're looking for is all. There isn't a single modern Audi engine you can do any work on without doing one or the other.

          Like

          >the only way to get at that part of the engine in most models is to pull the engine or pull off the front of the car.
All their V engines have the chains on the gearbox side, so you're dropping the engine, period.

said, all the Vs have to be pulled, and as far as I'm aware all the 4-cyls since like the mid 00s/early 10s require taking off the front. I think you'd probably have to go back at least 30 years to find an Audi you could work on without having to pull the engine or front for every repair.

nta - but the under-hood terminals for the 2.0 tfsi are fucking retarded. they're inside a tiny cubby underneath a tiny cover in the dead middle of the front windshield cowl. you need the dexterity of a safe cracker to pop it open without dislodging the whole cowl and nerves of steel to go fiddling around trying to hook up the leads to a pair of terminals you can barely reach or see like it's a game of operation.

Sprockets and chains wear and lengthen over time if they don't slip. The problem is German engines are twin banks with chains. They wear out faster than OHV and single bank OHC. When it's time to change them it's a lot of work. Some might have to take the whole valve train cover off, and that included taking the intake off. Sometimes the only way to access it is to remove the radiator and front end because the engine can't drop out. But that's not the worst of your problems because you aren't the one wasting time doing that and be paying for somebody else's time to fix it. A chain timed car will sound noticeably different when it needs to have the timing chain, serviced because when the chain stretches and sprockets grind down, the valves retard and the engine sounds rougher. By then the decision is to ether junk it till it dies or sell it for somebody else's problems. That is if the oil don't get mixed by the coolant due to an internal design decision.
The only German cars older than ten years and still on the road are the ones with engines that are fixable.
Germans can't make twin banks, but they can make single banks.

My experience with them has been fairly good. I don't have an insanely equipped garage and I only use basic hand tools, but I've had no real issues working on any of mine. I've had 2 C5 A6s with the 4.2, a C6 S6 and a D3 S8 with the 5.2, and a C6 A6 Avant with the 3.0T.
Parts are fairly expensive all around, but RockAuto has had nearly every part I've needed. Most repairs are simple enough, but will take longer to complete than they would on a similar American/Japanese car. The most annoying thing about them in my experience has been that all of the torx bolts in the engine bay strip very easily, even if you're extremely careful when removing them.
Best advice I can give is only buy a used one if you'll be the 2nd owner, 3rd might be taking too big of a risk.

      Anonymous

Tip for the torx or any bolt really...
Give it a few solid whacks to the head with a hammer if possible. Try to hit straight down toward the threads and not laterally unless you dont have a choice. The vibration/impact shocks any potential corrosion. It can be a real life saver if youre in salty/rusty regions.
Also going back and forth incrementally while spraying penetrant into the threads helps a lot. If you have access to the rear of the threads spray that down as well.
Ive seen too many people just cranking away at clearly seized bolts that couldve been saved with some patience and technique

        Anonymous

It's usually the bolts on the valve covers/intake plenum/etc. that I run into issues with. I think it mainly comes down to the material coupled with heat cycles, so I've been ordering replacements ahead of time now. But I'll try the hammer next time to see if it makes my life easier. Thanks anon

Audifags vaguely remember that Audi used to make good, smart, reliable cars and refuse to accept that they don’t anymore.

Yeah, that's because Audis have always been problematic cars. Put a manual dip on (who the fuck that it was a good idea to remove the single most reliable and foolproof diagnostic in a car and replace it with a fucking expensive and problem prone sensor buried in the engine’s guts?) but by then the damage was done.

It depends on the year and engine, and if you aren't retarded. For example, some of the older models came with dual clutch transmissions which require service every 35 to 40,000, mi. lots of people did not do this service and if they didn't do this service, be prepared for the transmission to shit out.

Any 2.0T made before 2013 is a nightmare never buy.
2.0T made 2013+ is one of the most reliable engines ever made.

3.0T (S4/S5) 2019+ Incredibly reliable and absolute monster engine. 3.0 Supercharged (prior to 2016) is also a great engine. but comes with the dual clutch transmissions.

2008 -2012 ish was the EA888 Gen 2. They switched to the gen 3 in 2013. gen 2 was horrible. I actually got around 4 grand from owning one in class action lawsuits.

Among other items, updated timing tensioner and guides, oil filter screen update, new design on control rings, better gasket on rear panel of vacuum pump, and updated rear main seal.

gen 3 EA888 2013+ model years is bullet proof and better designed for power output. You can get 280 without even updating the catalytic converter which is insane.

Were aware that changes were made through the different gens with some improvements, but a lot of the core problems

Lol here we go again... Inb4 theyre capable of almost 500hp on stock internals
          >Timing chain wear - all of them
          >Thermostat housing - all of them
          >Waterpump - all of them
          >Carbon fouling - all of them
          >Clogged PCV - all of them
          >Rear main vacuum leak - all of them
Could go on about oil comsumption, weak ignition coils, timing chain tensioners, vvt phasers etc...

still remain even with proper maintenance.
Sure you can make good power gains with simple mods but the engine has achilles heels that are more mileage based rather than stress based
