Because it's a 5/10 album if you're being generous. It sounds like one of the Jon Hassell albums that he made after he stopped giving a single shit. It's embarrassing that Andre released it and now it's doubly embarrassing for Pitchfork that they fell for it.
Interesting points. I’m not well versed enough in experimental stuff to know whether or not 3k is being a tryhard (maybe not the right word to use) here or not
I like this. Not sure if it's a 8.3, but I wouldn't be surprised if others really thought this was a high 8 or 9 for them. Opening track is great, but I really think it's funny that Pitchfork did what the Grammy's did for IGOR with Tyler.
>Hyper stress/focus on this NOT being a Rap album and something different from other works >Ends up being well recieved by critics for being a UNIQUE RAP ALBUM
Same-ish anon.
I didn't know New Age was a thing, so I'm not sure how well this fares with the greats or avg. albums in that genre. I don't think 3K is being a tryhard (at least from the interviews and shit he's done/talked about).

Fuck off homosexual Jon hassell sucks cock man sorry I don’t wanna listen to the same stupid ass new age drones bullshit. If it isn’t Harold budd I don’t want it honestly
Easy one. Picrel.
I don't remember P4k reviewing this and giving it an 8+.
But I guess that's excluded since the author is not a legendary hiphop black figure
Thanks for the rec, but this isn't even true anon. Apparently they put out very recent score on it anon (Oct. 14), but what's funny is how they've only reviewed 3 projects of his, all being scored in the high 8's.
Pretty embarrassing anon.

Yeah but this is way better than this guy's new age noodling, it's a classic from the 80s.
The Japanese guy was able to make music like this 40 years ago and it didn't even age up badly. 40 years passed and what a current musician can do is just something worse than what's been done 40 years ago and have it hailed as a high quality new release?
It's like the implication here is that since music is so shit these days even some mediocre new age album by some older hiphop fame now fetches an 8+ score just because everything else is so shit.

Thanks for the effort post.
I'm sure you're right about the album being really good, and aging well, but I just have one problem with the part about the Andre not being able to top something made 40 years ago, and thinking it's worse.
It could be the album isn't that good and it's being overhyped because of the name behind it, but also could be that you simply think it's not good since you've heard much better shit in this genre? Like do you think an album made in 2015 is shit, b/c in 1995 there was a much better made in the genre? Sure maybe the 2015 album doesn't even compare to the 1995, but on its own, does the 2015 seem like a genuinely good album, even if it's not a 8 or 9?
I'd agree with you if P4K lowballed, the Japanese guys album, but they didn't, and they gave great scores to his other shit. Also, I don't think their scores are trying to say this album is better than that. Like I'm sure if you got the same person who rated this album an 8.3 to rate the Surround album, they'd rate it higher, or maybe not. Though we will never know, at least now, they gave the album a solid 9, than anything lower than this 8.3 >It's like the implication here is that since music is so shit these days even some mediocre new age album by some older hiphop fame now fetches an 8+ score just because everything else is so shit.
I'm not really sure, since I've seen this happen so many times before. Like an Artist or album come out in a genre that's not really active or popular (mainstream wise at least), or is going through a revival period, and the album or artist will get more praise than they deserve.
I’ve noticed that rap heads are very ignorant of rock music aside from very popular artists and it’s honestly very tiresome so they get a hamfisted interpretation of rock but if you listen to any rap that’s not played on the radio they accuse of you acting white what gives?
Scaruffi is the only critic who gives serious critiques of albums anymore. Once he dies, and it will happen very soon, garbage bin albums like this will just get 90 scores on Metacritic and bolded ratings on RYM with no pushback from anybody.
TikTok generation doesn't give a fuck about music criticism or curation like it
used to be in the blog era
Real shit only the weirdos of the generation all still band around Fantano for his opinion and he makes their taste.
Fantano is single handedly responsible for ever zoomer fuckboi you know who thinks Tyler, Kendrick, Brockhampton, and throw in some odd white musicians like The Strokes are the greatest shit ever
honestly nevermind and some stuff by some underground rappers i listen to + mgk trying other genres is horrid but this Andre 3k album & Let's Start Here are good examples of where genre experimentation works
>Rap/Experimental
This is your average poptimist brain, when a rap artist decides to branch out and do something that isn't rap, it's called "Experimental"
lol they still call it rap because he used to be a rap artist. I swear peoples brain cells went out the fucking window in the past 5-10 years. People are fucking braindead i swear
It's a bit of a mixbag and the pacing isn't perfect in my opinion, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless. The way the production was carried alongside those tribal elements reminds me of an obscure bandcamp album I heard months ago (Color Tease by Charaxes), it feels both dreamy and mystic. And there's some genuine creativity here.
I don't know if I'd give it an 8/10, but it's good, it might grow on me with repeated listens. I've only listen to it twice, and ambient albums tend to requiere more time spent with them.
Also, I didn't expect to enjoy the album that much since that was the first time I listened to an album of his. I only checked the album out of mere curiosty.
And why do they list the album as "rap/experimental"?
the guy used to be a rapper so its rap in some shape or form! I fucking hate critics and journalists and zoomer retards with low IQs so much.. I dont know what the fuck happened to people but theyre blithering fucking idiots these days yet they get paid to do this online shit. Its sickening honestly
>Genre: Rap
Racist morons.
I bet Fantano will be shameless enough to actually complain that it's not rap
Who cares what fagtano thinks
Honestly embarrassing for Pitchfork
Why? Besides them calling it rap

post a better album of the same genre
Anything by Alice Coltrane

>experimental rap
>it's some new age ambient drone record
They're basically trying to gaslight into people the notion that rap is now music, look they even use instruments.
IIRC the p4k review of lil yachty's rock album accused him of selling out to boomer rockism and abandoning rapheads
I’ve noticed that rap heads are very ignorant of rock music aside from very popular artists and it’s honestly very tiresome so they get a hamfisted interpretation of rock but if you listen to any rap that’s not played on the radio they accuse of you acting white what gives?
It's because hip hop is both a genre of music and a lifestyle. If it's who you are that's what you're going to listen to.
>Rap fans, including myself, don’t want to hear it
what a trash biased review
I noticed the same bitterness in their RAM 10th anniversary review, except from am edm fag
Scaruffi is the only critic who gives serious critiques of albums anymore. Once he dies, and it will happen very soon, garbage bin albums like this will just get 90 scores on Metacritic and bolded ratings on RYM with no pushback from anybody.
Scaruffi doesn't even listen to most of the albums he reviews, by his own admission
>inb4 defending that
When did he admit to not listening to most of the albums he reviews? I'd love to see the evidence.

tik tok people are scum
>rapper makes non-rap album
>WAOW! (Ö)/
pitiful
yeah really its pathetic people get this shocked. Thats how conservative the hip hop genre really is isnt it, which is stupid
We should encourage their transition to real music
honestly nevermind and some stuff by some underground rappers i listen to + mgk trying other genres is horrid but this Andre 3k album & Let's Start Here are good examples of where genre experimentation works
artists making the music that they actually want to make is a good thing regardless of the actual outcome imho
agreed, it also helps rapfags explore other genres if they like it
Huh
They gave it 10 because of André 3000 and then subtracted the actual rating from that.
Listening to it now, imagine if nujabes was alive him & andre 3k teamed up for a remix version
>The Slang Word P(*)ssy Rolls Off the Tongue with Far Better Ease Than the Proper Word Vagina. Do You Agree?"
deep af
Woah this is the genius rapper Andre 3000?
He surely is a genius.
What a genius rapper!
genuinely tried to listen but I got too grossed out when I saw the titles on soulseek
>Rap/Experimental

This is just taking the piss.
That album is a joke.
Andre can piss in a bottle and they would still praise it.

because they are racist

and you have these "influencer" tik tok people that give people ad revenue who are complete vapid dumb pieces of shit
Whats some good new age outside of like Enigma
tangerine dreams first album "electronic meditation"
Or any of their stuff really. Plus Mike Oldfields Tubular Bells and Ommadon
If you like Enigma I don't really know what to say
The first album is pretty good!
