It’s always been there. The most famous musicians even hundreds of years ago were associated with secret societies and the elite monarchies. Videogames just extend the “art imitates life” functionality of culture.
I think there always was, when comes to games... well, the 70s to 90s Satanic Panic had a lot to do with movies like The Exorcist, Amityville, Rosemary's Baby, The Omen, End of Days, Stigmata, Devil's Advocate as much as in games such as Doom and others that incorporated a lot of satanic aesthetics.
But nowadays is worse, since at least back then it was all satanic but you were supposed to kill the devils.
Nowadays the devil is basically the good guy (see the TV show "Lucifer") that is desirable to be, to follow, to learn from. The villains are usually the church, clergymen and conservative people, as the devil takes the place of the oppressed and the ones who is like us and suffer for us.

i agree that the portrayal of evil in media is pretty bad and should not be praised, im not exactly surprised that it is being portrayed in a positive light though. its easy to blame it on just people wanting to live hedonistically without judgement but i think most of it is just people who have been or felt ostracized from Christianity from other christians and so they just do a full 180 bc the most people will do a reactionary 180 if they feel like they are being excluded from a group, for example on the other side of the coin, when the left started becoming more progressive people started shaming other leftist for not being leftist enough and it seems like a lot of those people left leftism and stuck at center left or radicalized into being alt righter or conservative. so if thats the case imagine a dominant cultural group who uses tactics of shame and fear on their neighbors and kids if they dont conform to a certain standard, i mean the natural reaction for any creature with self preservation is to get out of a perceived hostile environment. mix in a percieved better alternative (pleasure) and most people would choose the latter over the former

Of course, it is a little bit of both. But what is the root cause of it? If I am to pinpoint, I believe it has a direct correlation with the 60s counterculture. You see, when some of the post-war born boomers (not all of them, but a considerable amount) decided in their twenty-something years of age to leave religion and become hedonists, they didn't face much consequences of it. And soon these guys became involved with media industry. The 70s Hollywood industry made really good movies, but if we take a closer look at these movies, we will see that they were hailing the people from the margin, the dissents, the criminals etc. The X generation grew consuming these products and became less interested in order and religion and started to move forward this "deconstruction" of society, to the point that nowadays only few practices of that idea of order survives.
Now, the millennials are pretty much doing an "archeology" of the past and trying to live these new morals. Of course, it is a minority of millennials doing that, but let us remember that a minority of hippies started this mess.
So, that's my take.
