This, the posters from then just aren't around anymore. When I go to a show for a band that used to be LULZ royalty I like to probe the 20 somethings to see if they used LULZ back in the day. Most people I suspect do and they almost always said they haven't been there in years.
>been waiting for this album for years >September 29th release date was supposed to keep me going through the month, had big plans for a comfy first listen >album leaks and I haven't even listened to it >no reason I can't listen to it but it never feels like the right time
Kinda depressed over this. The album is out, people are loving it and I already know I'll love it. But for some reason it just doesn't feel right.
Man I used to love these kind of threads from when Centipede hz and Painting with came out. Was fun to see the leaks come out and then get hyped and talk about the music, people talking about their favorite songs
Either it's not at all like that anymore and it's a bunch of garbage nonsense, or I lost interest in animal collective long ago. Prob both but the latter too. I haven't even heard Time Skiffs much yet. After Painting With, which I do really like actually, I lost interest for some reason. They seem like they tried to be their old 00s selves after PW but it just sounds contrived and more boring and less exciting than before.
Time Skiffs and IIN don't sound like their 2000s material to me. They have their own feel, and are distinct from each other too. IIN is better than TS imo. Give it a try when you're feeling receptive.
I might be on the opposite side of the spectrum here. I fell off in 2016 and fell back in last year. What's funny is I was on this board for Painting With and tried to stockholm myself into loving it so I could be there for a classic AnCo album. Once I saw them live and got some space I could finally admit it was meh. When Time Skiffs came out I gave it one listen and was disappointed by it but there were enough good moments to make me curious about what they were up to and check out bootlegs. I wasn't amazed but I liked Genie's Open and Stride.
Before I really realized what happened I had listened to every show I could find and saw them live twice in 2022. I was absolutely in love with these songs to the point where I could see them live launching into legendary songs like Reverand Green or Chores and my first thought would be "this is taking time away from Defeat or Magicians".
Now that it's here it feels like the end of an era and I'm not sure I even want or need to hear the studio versions. It feels like I need to figure out what to do with my life now.
Hmm maybe they are turning into a huge live band. Before, it seemed like they weren't as good live and they crafted their studio songs to perfection. Their albums always do take some time to digest and grow. Maybe just need some listening time to Time Skiffs more. Painting With is not very popular with fans or in general but I enjoyed it. It's catchy and fun and has a nice colorful production which was good to smoke to but I can see people being meh about it
Either way I'd like to get hyped about their new shit and take the time to enjoy them again. Just seems like I am in the mood for them once in awhile anymore even though they're one of my fave bands. I need to see them live
Time Skiffs and IIN don't sound like their 2000s material to me. They have their own feel, and are distinct from each other too. IIN is better than TS imo. Give it a try when you're feeling receptive.
Def want to get into Time Skiffs. My OCD brain bothers me because I love almost everything else they've done for the most part. Those recent EPs didn't really catch me much though, like Bridge to quiet? Didn't they have a soundtrack album or 2 as well? They're way more prolific these days than is to my liking. I hate when artists I love are so prolific. Like of Montreal too. It's like stop and give it some time already, I don't have time for all these albums
They did do some soundtracks, but iirc only Geo and Deakin did the soundtrack to Crestone. Only listened through it once and haven't seen the movie, but I remember liking it.
I think they've kind of always been known for being a live band. They transition most of the songs together in a way that there's only 2 or 3 breaks throughout the entire set. I used to think they sounded unpolished and shitty in their bootlegs (especially Panda's voice in the late 00's) but they have matured a lot and are now easily one of my favorite live shows.
I still like Painting With and those songs (like all of them) really shined live. The only way I engage with PW at this point is Repainted Along, a fan made compilation of all PW era songs live as well as the PW versions of the older songs they played on that tour.
I can see PW songs being cool live. There's a lot of potential energy and enthusiasm to the vocals and how upbeat they are that I can see it coming across better in that way. I will have to check it out >Repainted Along
I just heard this title kicked around the other day but never knew it existed. I will have to hear that one. Is there a.link ? Or maybe it's on soulseek, I dunno

Be on the lookout for Jimmy Mack and see if you can guess what cocktail of drugs Avey was on that night because there's no fucking way he's sober.
I regret not seeing the PW tour after not liking the album that much because they played Alvin Row for the first time ever at the concert I could've went to
Magician's isn't even top 3 for me, I just specifically wanted to hear the new stuff and Magicians is a long one. I'm glad I got Genie's and Defeat in the same night but sad I never got Stride.
[...]
Alvin Row live was kind of disappointing imo. I was hoping for the full intro culminating in "RUUUUUUUUUUUN" but they launch right into the final section. Still an amazing live moment, though. The energy from the crowd when they realized what was happening was incredible and after the song they somehow gave Avey a standing ovation despite having been already standing the whole time.
I still maintain that Repainting Along is the greatest Animal Collective release

>I still maintain that Repainting Along is the greatest Animal Collective release
i don't think it's a coincidence that PW is their most undercooked album (and easily worst post-sung tongs) and it's also the only one they didn't play live before recording
Magicians is not that good lmfao. Defeat is great though. Unfortunately, IIN is there most boring album so far, dumbed down and easy just for the sake of being able to do it live easier after the absolute hassle that PW tour was >We will never get a PW tour again
Their best tour tbh, the TS/IIN tour lacked so much energy it was depressing

that's disappointing. Chocolate Girl on Avey's latest tour was great, but it's obviously a lot easier to play live than Alvin Row. especially because he barely screams anymore

>Chocolate Girl on Avey's latest tour was great
Agreed, the two times I saw it gave me the career spanning full circle catharsis I was hoping for from Alvin Row live. Everything else he played those nights was just a bonus.
>Alvin Row live was kind of disappointing
Yeah I remember a video someone took of one of the first shows of the PW tour back then a day or so after and I was excited they played it but it was a bit disappointing. It just didn't come across as good as the original
Magicians is like the less downer Safer or Cuckoo Cuckoo of this album and Defeat is the only other song even on the same level. I don't know how there are people who don't see it as golden-era good honestly, even the highlights from Skiffs or their full band 10s output don't evoke the same feeling
Is Defeat 20 mins long? That is very interesting. I haven't gotten the chance to hear any of these new songs yet but I'm hoping for more really good stuff with Deakin

almost 22. also Stride Rite is probably the best song Deak has ever made, solid #3 after Magicians and Defeat

Deakin only has one song but it's one of the best of the era, though if you like Deakin you should look up a recording of the 2022 version of Wide Eyed, which ended up being a live highlight.
Magicians doesn't come anywhere near Safer. It's boring, not even in the same ROOM as Safer
3 weeks ago

it's not but because Safer is overrated, I just put it there because Cuckoo Cuckoo isn't that similar and Magicians does the slow first section thing way better
Defeat was kind of a grower for me during the tour. Listen to the lyrics and you realize it's a pre-apocalyptic midlife crisis but with a positive message to stay resilient in the face of uncertain times.
if the middle section was better and took up more of the song instead of the final section being so stretched out it'd be fine. the original music box version is neat to listen to for this reason, it's probably too fast but there's not a dull point in it and it feels way better balanced
All they needed to do to save the studio middle section was include some Avey yelps and ad libs. The space in between the chorus is conspicuously empty if you've heard any of the live versions.
that'd definitely help a lot, the middle has just always been conspicuously less magical than the rest of the song even going back to the original version. the studio take isn't bad at all, it just has the issues you mention and gets a bit generic 00s indie with the vocal buildup. it's still way better than the 2019 version at least, I just wish they'd come up with something that matches the strength of the rest of the song to begin with
last part is definitely the best but it's more overlong than the first one imo, both could be trimmed a little. when I saw them live the third time they went through the "just a frightened mother" part was when everyone either went to piss or get another drink, which is saying something because the crowd all seemed like active fans. it's just too much for too long (though the studio version does a much better job of keeping it engaging.) if they kept it faster similarly to the MBV version for the first half of the last part it could maybe work, letting the "oh no not now" slow decay really stand out
Stride rite is phenomenal, Deak's voice is amazing as always. I also liked All The Clubs Are Broken, it's kinda short but the harmonizing reminds me of MPP or FBK. Defeat was overall better in the music box set. I also preferred Aveys vocals in the music box version of Magicians from Baltimore but this one is still pretty good. Rest of the album was kinda forgettable but I'm sure they'll grow on me after a couple more listens
crazy that this was recorded in December 2021 and is finally being released. since they haven't been touring other new material it'll probably be like 4 years until their next release
That would be cool to see. Whatever the case, Deak is clearly peaking and I need more. Would be funny to tell '09 LULZ about the future of AnCo, they're never believe it
actually just remembered Deakin and Avey produced this album, none of their vocals though. was made in 2010 and released two years ago. it's actually pretty good

Downloading from slsk now, is this legit? Where did the leak come from? LULZ seems unnaturally calm for something like this
it's legit, in 320, sounds great, no idea where it came from, and magicians is up their with their best songs ever imo
That song and Genies Open are pretty magical. I dislike Gem and I a lot though unfortunately
>LULZ seems unnaturally calm for something like this
it's not 2011 anymore

Any Panda bangers in IIN?
Car Keys is my favorite from TS.
He has two and they're both so good
bom bom
Panda's songs on IIN are better than his TS songs.
LEAK IT DEAK

So less than between PW and TS
I was fine with waiting for them to get their shit together after PW. plus we got Sleep Cycle, two great Avey solo albums, and one great Panda Bear EP
I just want another Deak solo record. Sleep Cycle was and still is better than anything else they've released 2010+. A top 3 AnCo album as well
agreed. or an album or EP with just Avey and Deak to see what it would be like
That would be cool to see. Whatever the case, Deak is clearly peaking and I need more. Would be funny to tell '09 LULZ about the future of AnCo, they're never believe it

Do Avey and Deak even get along?
I know there still is a lot of resentment over the whole red velvet cupcake thing…
Avey lets him have one track per album in exchange for 10 sheets of acid
geologist
wonder if he still works for the government
>naggers from Baltimore
How are they going to get away with this one? And why do they keep letting Deakin name the songs?
For me it's ODDSAC
Oddsac is really actually very fucking good. Mr. Fingers, Kindle Song, Screens, Working, Tantrum Barb, What Happened are all at LEAST 8/10s.
What happened would be a 10/10 closer for a concert
