It WAS a good language for webshit backend, and the only reason for that was because webshit backend used to be a much different DX than it is now. There was no "cloud" that make it all retard-proof. Back then you had to choose between easy mode web hosting that only offered PHP, and doing everything yourself in a VPS/dedicated server.
That said: it was still saner than fucking Node.
Yeah, PHP was the only language you could host for free/cheap. That's what made it popular.

It's gotten to the point where I ask what language someone uses, they reply "node" or "Laravel" or "conda". PHP is SO easy and comfortable to make working shit with from nil.

The language is fine (and outright great for web development), but it's all horrible legacy code created by students many years ago.
I'm in charge of upgrading and extending these projects and while I have some freedom to clean this shit up, there are limits.
It's all very tiresome.
