Am I the only one who is sad to see lightning ports going away? They are so much better than usbc. The connection is much more secure, the connector is easier to plug in, and the fragile easy to damage male connector is on the easily replaceable connector instead of in the device. The usbc connector is delicate. Every usbc connector I have ever touched is all wiggly and loose.
The only advantage usbc has over lightning is data transfer, and even then its only going to make a noticeable time speedup when you are doing your first overnight phone transfer. When was the last time any regular user connected a phone to a computer. It's just not the right application for such a connector. The most disappointing part is that I know the reason we are here is cause apple was a proprietary dick with the licensing for the lightning port.
yeah same, I prefer lightning
The whole point of the connecting being slightly loose is to avoid putting stress on the components. Unless you have found a C connection that didn't work because it was too loose you are just complaining about a safety and durability design feature.
I suppose there is some strain release from having loose connections. I actually have had to I have had to bend the shroud back into alignment because they are so flimsy. Luckly the contact board didn't break. I might be able to bend a lightning connector with my thumb if I pressed any harder, but I dont actually want to break mine.
I remember a youtube video (probly by ifixit) where they talked about the recyclability of wired headphones vs wireless, and I remember them claiming that recycling cables is something that is quite feasible.
>fragile easy to damage male connector is on the easily replaceable connector instead of in the device.
These days people keep their cable longer than their phone.
It's funny that the EU mandated USB-C to cut down on electrical waste but had no plans for the billions of lightning port cables, etc,, that are going to be obsolete.
This has little to do with it in reality.
It's EU protectionism for companies selling charges and cables (actually made in china) who do not want to pay royalties for lightning.
>royalties
Im not even sure you buy lightning cables. I did a wired to bluetooth headphone conversion once as a side project and wanted to mount a lightning port in it for charging. You cant even buy them off digikey or mouser.
These thing were going to be obsolete in a few years anyway. The change will result in overall less e-waste.
No. The issue with technology is fragmentation. Not having a simple standard is really fucking stupid and wasteful. It's like how linuxfags fork everything, and make 100s of "distros" that all do the same job. There is no reason to have many tools for 1 purpose. Work together to make the standards good instead of trying to reinvent every goddamn wheel you get your hands on. If Apple wanted to win this battle, they should have allowed their shitty cable to be used outside it's own hardware.
>Direct-attach PCI-E
>Secure
You're having a laugh m8
Nope. I’m worried about the reliability of USB-C, too. I might end up getting a Qi charger, but that won’t do anything for my iPad. Oh, and Qi chargers waste a lot of energy, and Apple is trying to compensate by…only charging when the power is green, by default.
>The only advantage usbc has over lightning is data transfer, and even then its only going to make a noticeable time speedup when you are doing your first overnight phone transfer.
u wot? An overnight transfer is one of your strongest arguments for sticking with Lightning. If it takes forever while you're sleeping, who gives a shit?
having virtually everything else use USB-C and apple forcing the meme of lightning is stupid. if apple had open sourced the lightning cable, this could have been avoided, instead they enjoyed the gravy train of mFI royalties for years until governments had enough with ewaste and frustration
>The connection is much more secure
Sure
>the connector is easier to plug in
What? They're both reversible.
>and the fragile easy to damage male connector is on the easily replaceable connector instead of in the device
Sure, however a new charge port, even for my $2k phone, costs $20.
>The connection is much more secure
It isn't
>the connector is easier to plug in
Literally no difference
>the fragile easy to damage male connector is on the easily replaceable connector instead of in the device
Actually the usb c approach is better because the parts that experience wear are all in the cable
>usbc connector is delicate. Every usbc connector I have ever touched is all wiggly and loose.
No
>The only advantage usbc has over lightning is data transfer, and even then its only going to make a noticeable time speedup when you are doing your first overnight phone transfer.
Lightning has a pathetic bandwidth. The gold plated contacts on each cable are half dead because apple sucks at engineering. Call me when I can connect a 4k external display to a lightning device.
>When was the last time any regular user connected a phone to a computer.
Hundreds of millions, every day
>It's just not the right application for such a connector.
"using a connector to connect to stuff is the wrong application"
>The most disappointing part is that I know the reason we are here is cause apple was a proprietary dick with the licensing for the lightning port.
It's because the lightning port is retarded and no other manufacturer would put one in because they suck
Also sage
Lighting is the stupidest obsolete connector out there. Even apple's other products all use usb C/thunderbolt.
This is objectively correct
Lightning is not awful, but just why when USB C is superior
Also apple had the chance to nip this whole thing in the bud years ago but they are ultraisraelites and couldn't bring themselves to work with regulators to make lightning an actual standard
itoddlers eternally btfo, go buy another new charger and dongle you Stockholm syndrome suffering suckas
>easier to plug in
Do you have cerebral palsy or something?
