Your mana might be too low to cast the spell. Try drinking a potion (ideally something blue colored) right before casting and see if that works.

Dark magic isn't necessarily evil. In extremely broken down terms, it's just the use of more extreme emotions and evocation to complete rituals. Once you start using that kind of magic to harm others, or hurt/sacrifice people or animals to use their pain and suffering for your gain, that's what corrupts your soul and goes into the territory of evil.
Also, potion making isn't dark magic. It's more in line with chemistry/alchemy, and botany/herbology.
