The marketing made it out to seem pretty generic and uninteresting. Like it or not, but "angry warrior guy" doesn't really sell anymore. It also just didn't get that much advertising in general. Robert Eggers has some pull with cinephiles, but most normies have never heard of him. Stop turning literally every fucking thing into some new front in the culture war. Go outside.

I don't care if this was a faithful retelling of the original story. It was bland and one dimensional. The story was not compelling. The movie was competently directed. Bravo eggman

It failed because the current highest point of culture and art for the past 20 years have been fucking superhero movies.
The average normie has dropped 20 IQ points these past 20 years, you see fucking Stranger Things and The Boys ads everywhere when 30 years ago people would laugh you out of the room if you tried to put Buffy the Vampire slayer(which shits all over modern series, mind you) up there with real films.
So when a film that doesn't play out like a capeshit comedy comes out and takes itself seriously and pretty straight, also tries to be somehow historically accurate in an era of Vikings with boiled biker leather and double fade haircuts, normies are not gonna react well.
There's also the fact the MC is shown participating in a typical raid at the beginning, and the movie doesn't shy away from showing what happened after Viking raids(slavery, rapes, mass civilian killings), and nuance is not for your average moviegoer.

Also it failed because the movie is just bad, it is flat and pretentious and puts effort in all of the wrong places. It doesn't matter how good your set design is if the script is fucking awful.

Eggers is a set designer after all. He loves mythical stuff and knows how to build good visuals and direct them. Thats it.
The Northman just showed he needs someone else to write his script for him and cut some slack for Blaschke.
Except it was good and written like a folk tale, which is exactly what it is going for.

No it's because period piece movies aren't box office blowouts. The Green Knight had multiracial casting and made less money than The Northman. But because it made more than it's budget The Green Knight can't be called a failure the same way The Northman can.
