Hey IQfy, I'm ready to turn my Windows machine into a Linux masterpiece....
Only one problem. I use ableton. What do?
Is it possible? Should I stick with Windows?

Bitwig, I know it's propriety. But still. It's like Ableton but more Quirky.
fpbp
nonwhite
seconding bitwig. decent experience on linux, depending on how shitty your plugins are coded
>I'm an ableton user
Use the fricking Ableton forum then?
>im ready
not while you're still a gay moron who uses a daw you're not.
spin up a vm and see if it runs your desired software.
Linux and music production go together like fish and bicycles
Even if you manage to somehow run Ableton, every single VST has its own quirks that may or may not run on Linux
A dual boot or a VM (for Linux) would be a better solution for this if you really want to learn Linux
It depends. Why do you want to switch to Linux?
Linux comes with undeniable trade offs that are worth it for some (myself included), but if you're just switching to be cool, you should probably just keep to windows.
If you're switching because you value your freedom, try easing your way into it first. Start replacing programs you use every day with free alternatives and learn them on windows, where you can still fall back to the old ones if necessary.
Running big software like Ableton or FL under wine has been proven to work, but it's probably not the most reliable.
unfortunately this is true. Linux has some cool things for music production like the low-latency kernel, but that's about the only thing it has, and i'm not sure if it's that much better than windows.
wintoddlers btfo
if you suck at making music it's on you, no one wants you putting other people down just because of your own incompetence. change of tool set shouldnt affect you as artist, unless you're this trash
why am i in this
i literally use linux you fricking gay.
for agreeing with morons. when linux has so many options to completely ditch windows, which what i did
please get off HRT as soon as possible. you're not a kawaii anime girl you're just a homosexual
Linux is a hobby, embed and server kernel not a desktop OS. Don't bother.
Ableton has worked fine for me under wine and pipewire out of the box, only problem is there are some occasional stutters in the audio and such which were mostly fixed by increasing the buffer size or using a RT kernel (havent really tried any VSTs other than the stock ones tho, also mp3 files dont work for some reason)
>also mp3 files dont work for some reason
Does anyone know how to fix this? Maybe a version of QuickTime wine tricks doesn't provide?
https://noisebuilders.com/does-ableton-run-well-on-linux/
According to this article it will run but a beefy machine is required.
Well, I use FL studio, and unless windows becomes "only cloud computer, pay per month" meme, I will stick with windows 10 and FL studio with an offline PC for music production. I doubt there are new plugins in the future that will be worth ugrading your OS anytime soon.
TL:DR Stick with an offline windows PC. Sounds boomer AF, but it's the only non self-torture way.
worst case you could try ardour
what the frick is ableton?
if it doesn't work with only free software, its more like disableton.
>i see its an audio thing
literally just use ardour or LMMS, i dont work with audio crap but im sure its good enough and most likely better than proprietary counterparts.
if you need very simple edits, try sneedacity/tenacity, since audacity became nonfree spyware.
You have no idea what you are talking about. LMMS and Ardour don't even compare to Ableton which is an industry standard for music production. You'll spend more time configuring settings and tracking down barely passable FOSS VSTs and effects in Ardour the time that you'll learn and produce an entire album in Ableton.
This anon is right. Music production on Linux is masochist tier hard mode compared to Windows and macOS. Over all it's a bad idea.
That said if you are stubborn enough to go the linux route for music production, stick with professional paid native linux DAWs like Bitwig or Renoise. They both work with no bullshit right out of the box and have everything needed built in so you can hit the ground running.
Or just stick with Windows or macOS for music production and not have to limit yourself.
>ableton
>unable to run on functional operating systems
>""industry standard""
>"foss"
*free software
>heh, stick with proprietary broken shitware instead of restricting yourself!
you are restricting yourself if you use proprietary shitware lmao, imagine not even being able to control or let alone OWN the computer you use.
you are pathetic and poor, unable to afford freedom...
not taking your bait, wintoddler.
compile a single line of C code and run it without BSOD'ing or having to install 20GB proprietary microshaft compiler bloat malware, then we can talk.
Not baiting. And you're moronic if you think that industry standards in music production aren't proprietary. Ableton, Logic, Pro Tools, Cubase, Bitwig, Renoise. All proprietary and all used by the pros.
And for the record, I'm a fricking IQfytard running Artix just like the rest of you autistic fricks. I've also done music production on both linux and mac and I can say that music production is absolute shit. So sperg out all you want homosexual. Everything you are saying about music production is wrong and you don't know what you are talking about.
>compile a single line of C code and run it without BSOD'ing or having to install 20GB proprietary microshaft compiler bloat malware, then we can talk.
Why? This has nothing to do with multitracking drums, splicing samples, sequencing midi, playing an instrument, room acoustics, composition, mixing, etc. You've got the whole rest of IQfy to sperg about that shit and you come to a music prod thread to do it? what a weirdo.
People like
are the reason people don't use Linux. Autistic spergs.
>the pros
name one who isnt part of a specific well known, much hated, and very small group of people forming a cult that sucks bloody mutilated baby penises.
>artix
backdoored, broken, shouldnt even exist. its only reason to exist is to support another init system, what the frick?
openRC is literally in the aur, go install it if you really want to.
>why? being functional has nothing to do with clicking buttons! Ö
the only reason why the pooprietary shitware doesnt officially support GNU, is because you-know-who HATES freedom.
>What do
Linux is a meme for morons, pedos, and contrarians. Use the OS that let's you do what you need to do without baby sitting it.
>OS that lets you do what you need to do without the need to babysit it
this is literally what GNU is lol, why on EARTH would it be the most used operating system in applications that require stability, reliability, flexibility, and FUNCTIONALITY, without having some microshaft homosexual telling you what you can do, and can't do.
lmao winglows cant even fricking run headless, get a functional OS, fed.
>the most used operating system
We're in the context of a PC.
Your PC isn't a server, moron.
This is the defacto goto argument for freetards and it's the absolute most moronic cope ever. For personal use even iOS has more users than freeware dogshit lol
my PC is literally a server, i dont even have a monitor for it.
I have a VNC server running on it so i can control qbittorrent, i use it as seedbox, i host my website on it, a minetest server, some crypto miners, and some AI bots shitposting on 4chud.
>muh PC and not server
if you only count moronic and tech illiterate people who use desktop computers, maybe.
but if you counted people who actually KNOW how to USE a computer, then it's the most used operating system on desktops.
its the most used FUNCTIONAL operating system on desktops too.
>freeware
freeware is a word used to describe proprietary nonfree malware that is merely "free of charge", but not free as in freedom.
you will never be free, iToddler.
>personal use
you mean "being used by a big tech company".
imagine being such a useless OS that you can't even compile yourself, and need to rely on higher, superior, and actually functional operating systems to do so.
Even fricking TempleOS is more functional than winglows, because it can compile itself; unlike your toddler meme malware "OS".
this thread is gay and so are you, learn to use the user forums
Didn't make it past the first comma because it implied your whole comment was just one big brick of "aKsHuAlLy"
>I'm high IQ
cringe
-ACK!
chyualley...
I'ts called Windows/NT, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Windows+NT.
NT itself is not an operating system, but a kernel. Windows is an operating system but requires a kernel, which is in this case, NT.
Please refrain from calling Windows "Windows" or "NT", thanks.
>blah blah blah
Wow you sure sound super smart brother. I wish I was smart enough to understand all that shit you just posted but I'm stupid as shit. I guess since I'm so stupid I'll just use one of the proprietary OSs meant for morons like me that always work and don't need above 80IQ to use, yet allow morons like me to do literally anything I want without needing anything from my dumb ass. I guess you win this time
winglows requires an IQ over 120 to set up and use, because its extremely clusterfricked and impossible to get working.
setting up GNU and using it requires an IQ above 90.
An idiot admires complexity, a genius admires simplicity.
>winglows requires an IQ over 120 to set up and use
Then why does every moron like me use it without issue? You said yourself I'm low IQ. I do not understand how both can be true, but again I'm moronic. Could you explain it to me?
because you dont set it up properly, and will end up reinstalling it after 3 months because it becomes unbearably slow and even more unusable than it already was to begin with.
winglows is not reliable or functional.
>because you dont set it up properly
I clicked the next button when it said to and I've never had to reinstall it. Maybe you're just too smart for software meant for smart people that only dumb people use?
have you actually USED winglows for anything other than web browsing, for longer than 3 months?
if you dont work for microsoft or studied the source code and know exactly where everything is, and know what exactly is trash and what to throw out (assuming you even have the PERMISSION to do so from microshaft lol, imagine not having root access...)
then yes
>studied the source code and know exactly where everything is
Nope. I use it because I don't give a shit about fricking with the OS. I want my OS to let me do the things I want which is work, web, hanging out with friends, and sometimes a bideo game without having to worry about it. If I fricked around with the OS internals I'd probably have to actually reinstall it then I'd lose all my stuff, but again it does what I need it to so why would I even need to stick my dick in it?
Linux is garbidge, don't bother
>he doesn't know how to spell garbage
go munch your curry somewhere else, you're just mad that your 'herro sir zis is microshaft supprot centre your conputar has virus' tricks don't work anymore, because GNU is beyond your understanding.
Gaaal ya autistic af get a mf job
Same boat except I use FL. What I'm thinking about doing is cloning the entire hard disk and running that image from KVM on Linux.
It'll be a pain in the ass to re-pirate every VST if it doesn't work though
just dual boot windows for ableton only. thats what I do. or move to bitwig if you don't mind ditching third party plugins.
