politics and overweening self-interest is what destroys any institution, gov't or religion or anything else.
Every kingdom in ancient times had a religion to go along with it, and every gov't eventually collapsed due to corruption and infighting. It's not religion that is the issue, it's human nature that is the issue (and gov't attracts the absolute worst of humanity)

Yup. It's why the ancient Greeks liked the idea of a random lottery that chose leaders bc all the buttholes try to govern others while nor.al people simply don't want that type kof power over others.

Yeah because Western Europe didn’t have Christianity at the same time as the Byzantines

Their corrupt behaviour was inherited from the Roman Empire though with its constant civil wars and emperor killings.

The same guy who Christianized the empire moved the capital there to begin with.
All the sectarian controversies sapped its strength to a degree that I'd rate it a negative force in Byzantine history, but it's hard to say "ruined" when it was founded by a Christian and only had one non-Christian emperor (whose Persian campaign was in any case a disaster) in its history.

Basically Western European rulers derived a lot of their legitimacy from 1: Being the "true heir" of Rome in some fashion or another. And 2: Being ordained by God through the "One True Religion" of Roman Catholicism. Therefore the West really couldn't acknowledge the legitimacy of a state that said 1: They were in fact the Roman Empire which would make your claim of being the heir of Rome either a: outright fake, or b:mean you had to swear allegiance to them. And
2: That your religion was false and not a real source of legitimacy and their different one was.
Add in to that just good old fashioned post-enlightenment racism and the West has all the reason to try and shit on the Byzies.

Let's be real, who the frick ever heard or used byzantine as a synonym for any of these before learning of the naming controversies?
Ans how are any of those things you list different from virtually every other state? You're gonna tell me the Frankish succession was free from political intrigue? Or that the Papal States weren't corrupt? Or that the HRE wasn't bloated?
The word is also just synonymous with something overly complex

Why would I larp about a story that describes Greeks as autistic? Your story seems less believeable as Greeks are pedantic about history and continue using older names. In 2015 they were still referring to North Macedonia (then still Republic of Macedonia) as "Fyrom" pronounced as a single word. Greeks still officially call France and Iran Gaul and Persia, why wouldn't they continue calling Istanbul Constantinople? Especially when it was officially renamed to Istanbul by a people and government they hate.

The admiration for Byzantium is almost entirely a 20th-21th century phenomenon. Before this it was universally viewed with distain and perceived as a corruption of Roman civilisation.

This is because the west had to destroy Byzantium to enforce its illegitimate claims of Germans being the Holy Roman emperor

        Anonymous

Sigh. I will settle this ancient dispute.

BOTH are legitimate in their claims.

The germans are the rightful inheritors of europe ever since the OG romans mixed themselves away. But the political office of the emperor in constantinople is the rightful office for rule over the rightful roman empire. The two are inseperable.

A german must legitimately come to the throne of the roman emperor.

Legend says that when this happens, it will be Jesus Christ.
