It depends, but how far do you live from NYC? I think summer could be a good time to visit but I have never been to NYC myself. Summer travel is just usually fun.
Minimum salary should be the best you can get, but switching jobs you can usually negotiate a higher salary. But doesn't moving seem more like phase 2 thing? First would be to take a few trips and get a feel for it and the relationship.

For comparison, I recently went to a tropical place and it cost like $5k but that was because of distance and expensive hotels, you can easily travel on much less.
