And here’s how to get a good deal on them

Grabbing magazines at a checkout stand in a grocery store is not the best financial move. Even a few dollars a week will add up to a couple of hundred dollars a year. How do you get a subscription to your favorite magazine and save money? What if you don’t have a favorite yet?  How do you choose? Which magazines are worth your time and money? How do you even know if you get a good deal? Read on to find the answers to all of your magazine subscription questions.

Rule #1
Look for FREE subscription offers. Free is the best deal you can get. Free is unbeatable. A lot of websites give away free magazine subscriptions regularly. A lot of magazines will offer you a free subscription to lure you in and it may be worth taking advantage of.

Rule #2
Don’t buy directly from the source or a newsstand. However backwards that sounds, in the magazine world that is exactly the right strategy. Generally speaking, if you buy a magazine subscription directly from the publisher, you will pay at least $2-5 more. For example, buying a digital copy from the National Geographic website directly will cost you $12 a year, but by going to a third party discount magazine subscriptions service, you can get it for less than $10.

Rule #3
Read the ads carefully and do the math. For example, $1 for an issue of Time magazine for 12 weeks sounds like a good deal, but considering that this deal will only last 3 months, you will end up paying considerably more for a yearly subscription this way. Often times, the longer the subscription, the better deal you get. Some magazines will offer a 2-year subscription for a significant discount.

Rule #4
Watch out for automatic subscription renewals. Most magazine subscriptions will automatically renew after a certain period of time, keep that in mind. You may get a $2/year awesome deal today, but when that subscription comes to an end, it will automatically renew your subscription at a full price. So getting that free subscription will end up costing you more and become pointless if you end up paying a full price later anyway.
